Learn to Sew Your Own Bags Series -- at Haphazard Quilting
Instructor and Workshop Series Designer: Katrina Geurkink

Workshop #2: Canvas Market Bag
Saturday July 20, 2024 9:00am – 2:00pm
Note: the classroom will remain open and the instructor will be available until 3:00pm in case you need additional time to complete your bag.

Come join us and learn how to create a canvas market bag in this interactive workshop with other people who love to sew and improve their skills together. Participants will develop core bag making skills and complete a light-weight canvas bag with some interesting and practical design elements. These canvas bags can be used for groceries to reduce plastic (and help save our oceans), as well as other types of shopping. They make great gifts around the holidays and for special occasions, and can be easily customized with your own creative elements. You will learn how to:

  • Plan design and color elements that match your current level of skill to ensure the best quality results

  • Create an unlined bag with a circle closure that is one of two design elements that can be used to hold the bag open when packing it with groceries and/or other purchased items

  • Finish the interior using both traditional and modern seaming techniques

  • Attach small loops to the sides of the bag to enhance the utility

  • Sew carrying straps with curved ends, and improve your skills in sewing curves in general

  • Use chalk and/or marking pens/pencils to improve the quality of your sewing

  • Personalize your bag with a unique nametag, embroidery and/or logo

Workshop participants will need to bring their own sewing machine

(in good working order) on the day of the workshop. They will also

need to purchase the pattern and the materials on the workshop

supplies list. Fabric and all supplies will be available at Haphazard

Quilts (note: some supplies may be distributed during class).

Skill Level: Basic - Intermediate. You do not need bag making skills/

experience to attend this workshop, but you should have basic to

intermediate sewing skills and be comfortable using your own sewing

machine.

Cost: $50.00 for the workshop, plus you will need to purchase the pattern

fabric and supplies.

You will receive more detailed information when you register and pay for the workshop.

* All workshops are subject to cancellation or rescheduling by Haphazard Quilts if the need arises. If you are unable to attend a workshop that has been cancelled and rescheduled, your workshop fee will be refunded to your shop account.
** If you need to cancel your registration for a workshop, you must do so two days prior to the date of the workshop.

Cancellations without a two-day notice are not refundable.

Learn to Sew Your Own Bags Series ~ at Haphazard Quilting

Instructor and Workshop Series Designer: Katrina Geurkink

Haphazard Quilts is excited to announce a new workshop series on

bagmaking. The series will begin with the basics in the first workshop

and offer more advanced techniques in future series workshops.

Workshop #1: Bag Making Basics

Saturday April 20, 2024 8:30am – 3:00pm

Note: the classroom will remain open and the instructor will be available

until 5pm in case you need additional time to complete your tote bag.

Come join us and learn how to create your own stylish tote bag in this

interactive workshop with other people who love to sew and improve

their skills together. Participants will learn basic bag construction and

leave with a solid understanding of how to “build a bag” from scratch.

You will also learn how to add some creative embellishments that

enhance the look and functions of your tote:

  • Creating a decorative pattern on the outside of the tote with contrasting fabrics

  • Adding a lining to your tote to give it a “professional” touch

  • Making three different kinds of pockets, both internal and external

  • Fastening a magnetic metal snap to the top of the bag

  • Adding a key chain leash

  • Personalizing your bag with a unique nametag and/or logo

Workshop participants will need to bring their own machine (in good working order) on the day of the workshop. They will also need to purchase the pattern and the materials on the workshop supplies list, and cut out their fabric prior to class. Fabric and all supplies are available at Haphazard Quilts. There are currently a variety of fabrics for sale that would be perfect for this tote.

Skill Level: Intermediate. You do not need bag making skills/experience to attend this workshop, but you should have intermediate sewing skills and be very comfortable using your own sewing machine.

Cost: $60.00 for the workshop, plus you will need to purchase your own fabric and supplies.

You will receive detailed information (including a supplies list, instructions to cut out your fabric prior to class, etc.) when you register and pay for the workshop.

Cancellations without two days notice are not refundable.
